Understanding Your Role & Accepting Invitation
Learn what it means to be an Emergency Contact and how to accept your invitation step-by-step.
What Does Being an Emergency Contact Mean?
As an Emergency Contact, you serve as a critical communication bridge during urgent situations. Your primary responsibility is to be available and responsive when the Will Owner faces an emergency or passes away.
Your Key Responsibilities
You are expected to:
- ✓ Be reachable during emergency situations
- ✓ Provide assistance when the Will Owner cannot be reached
- ✓ Notify Authorised Representatives when something happens
- ✓ Keep your contact information current so you can be reached quickly
- ✓ Respond promptly when contacted in critical situations
What You CAN Do
- • View your role details
- • Update contact information
- • See Will Owner's basic info
- • Notify Authorised Representatives
- • View emergency details page
What You CANNOT Do
- • Access will documents
- • Download estate files
- • Make decisions on behalf of Will Owner
- • Edit or delete Will Owner's information
- • Execute the will
Receiving Your Invitation Email
When someone designates you as their Emergency Contact, you'll receive an email invitation with all the information you need to get started.
What's in the Email?
Your invitation email includes:
- • Who invited you - The Will Owner's name
- • Your relationship - Family member, friend, colleague, etc.
- • What being an Emergency Contact means - Role explanation
- • Login credentials - Temporary password (new users) or magic link (existing)
- • Expiration date - 7-day deadline to accept
Time-Sensitive
Invitations expire after 7 days. If you don't receive the email or it expires, ask the Will Owner to resend the invitation from their Emergency Contacts dashboard.
Creating Your Account or Logging In
The login process depends on whether you're new to The International Will Registry or already have an account.
New Users
Your email includes a temporary password.
- Click the login link in your email
- Enter your email and temporary password
- Create a new secure password when prompted
- Complete your profile (phone number, etc.)
Existing Users
You'll receive a magic link for quick login.
- Click the magic link in your email
- You'll be automatically logged in
- Go to your Responsibilities dashboard
- Accept your invitation
Password Security
For new users: Change your temporary password immediately. Use at least 6 characters with one capital letter and one symbol (@, #, &). Never share your password with anyone.
Accepting Your Invitation
Once logged in, navigate to your Responsibilities dashboard to formally accept the Emergency Contact role.
Step-by-Step Process:
- Go to Dashboard → Responsibilities
- Find the pending invitation from the Will Owner
- You'll see a Pending status badge
- Click the "Accept Invitation" button
- Review your responsibilities in the modal that appears
- Click "Accept Invitation" to confirm
What You'll See
The acceptance modal shows:
- • Will Owner's name
- • Your relationship type
- • Your key responsibilities as an Emergency Contact
- • What this role means and what's expected of you
After Accepting - What Happens Next
Once you accept the invitation, your status changes immediately and both you and the Will Owner receive confirmation notifications.
Immediate Changes
What happens after acceptance:
- • Status changes from Pending to Active
- • You receive confirmation email with role details
- • Will Owner receives notification of your acceptance
- • You can access the Emergency Details page for this Will Owner
- • Your contact information is confirmed in the system
Your Next Steps:
- Update contact information - Ensure phone, email, and address are current
- Review emergency details - Click "Emergency Details" to see full information
- Keep credentials secure - Save your login information in a safe place
- Stay accessible - Ensure you can be reached at the contact information provided
Common Issues & Solutions
I didn't receive the invitation email
Check your spam/junk folder. If still not found, ask the Will Owner to verify the email address and resend the invitation.
My invitation expired before I could accept
Contact the Will Owner and ask them to resend the invitation from their Emergency Contacts dashboard. You'll have another 7 days to accept.
I can't log in with my temporary password
Copy/paste the password exactly as shown in the email—it's case-sensitive. If issues persist, use the "Forgot Password" link to reset your password.
I accepted but don't see the Emergency Details option
Refresh the page or log out and back in. Verify your status shows as Active. If the issue persists, contact support.
